Functional medicine is a very specific area that focuses on a few key things: finding the underlying cause of a patient’s health problems, using a laboratory based analysis system to determine what is wrong, using supplements to correct problems with medications as needed, and focusing ever more and more on lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, sleep and meditation.

Yes. Fred Harvey, MD is a physician with forty years of practice in internal medicine, geriatric medicine and functional medicine, and Sarasota's longest-standing functional medicine physician.

Dr. Harvey provides extensive, specialized one-on-one care. He listens intently and provides thorough consultation, accurate diagnosis, testing and treatment within his one to two hour appointments.

Functional Medicine Florida does not accept insurance or Medicare, and we do not file insurance paperwork on your behalf. However, we will provide a detailed super bill for services performed for you to submit to your insurance carriers. We also work closely with the labs to provide them with the correct diagnostic codes for them to submit to your insurance company. Please note that we are unable to process Medicare claims for services due to legal restrictions.

Insurance companies may cover a portion of medical services and laboratory tests performed by the physician based on individual contractual agreements between you and your insurance company. When labs are drawn, insurance information is sent with the specimens so that labs may bill for their services.

We connect via secure video, where you share your story, goals and health history. You complete an online intake, and we arrange labs that you can complete locally, remotely or via home-kit. You receive a personalized plan, delivered digitally, then continue with virtual check-ins, coaching and digital resources.

Yes. Care is now fully virtual, so you can work with us wherever you live in Florida. If you’re in Florida and prefer in-person labs or imaging, we’ll coordinate locally.

Functional lab testing takes a deeper dive into your health by observing the current state of your body through metabolism, hormones, immune system, genetics, and more. It provides data you won’t normally find with conventional medicine.

Testing may include blood, stool, urine, saliva, or hair samples to provide information about a variety of systems, including metabolic, nutritional, endocrine, gastrointestinal, hormonal, immune, genetic, detoxification, and others.
